Tutoring Referral Program
You can now earn extra money for referring students that are in need of math tutoring or want to sign up for a standardized test prep course. I am currently offering a commission of 10% for referrals for one on one tutoring and a commission of 5% – 10% for referrals for any test prep class. Here is an example of how you can earn money through referrals: If you refer a student to me, and that student pays my fee of $250 per session for 5 sessions, then you will be paid $125 for the referral. You will continue to receive commission for as long as I continue working with that student.
As another example, if you refer a student to me and they sign up for a class for $2000, you will receive $100 (5%) once that student completes his or her payment. If you refer a full class of 5 or more students, the class commission will be a full 10% (so, referring me a group of 5 students, each paying my discounted rate of $2000, will earn you a commission of $1000). Note that you cannot receive commission for anyone that is in your immediate family or that lives in your household (an exception is made if you refer a full class of 5 or more).

The Discriminant of a Quadratic Equation

Last time, I asked you to solve the following problem:
Example: You are given the following system of equations.
dx + ey = f
y = x2
where d, e, and f are integers. For which of the following will there be more than one (x, y) solution, with real-number coordinates for the system?
A. e2 + 4df < 0
B. e2 – 4df < 0
C. d2 – 4ef < 0
D. e2 – 4df > 0
E. d2 + 4ef > 0
Make sure to try this problem yourself before reading the following solution.
Solution: By the second equation, we have y = x2, so we can replace y by x2 in the first equation to get
dx + ex2 = f
Writing this quadratic equation in general form gives the following.
ex2 + dx – f = 0
So, we have a = e, b = d, and c = – f . Thus, the discriminant is
Δ = b2 – 4ac = d2 – 4e(– f) = d2 + 4ef
We want the quadratic equation to have two real solutions. Therefore, the discriminant must be positive. So, we must have
d2 + 4ef > 0
This is choice E.
