The Square Root Property

Before we learn about the square root property, let’s go over how to solve the problem given to you last week.
Solution to Last Week’s Problem
In last week’s post we went over how to complete the square on an expression of the form
x2 + bx
You can see that post here: Completing the Square
I also promised to provide a solution to the following question:
If the method of completing the square is used to rewrite the expression above in the form (x – h)2 + k, then what is the value of h – k ?
Solution: We divide –8 by 2 to get –4, and then square this number to get 16. So we add and subtract 16 to the given expression to get
x2 – 8x = x2 – 8x + 16 – 16 = (x – 4)2 – 16
So h = 4, k = –16, and therefore h – k = 4 –(–16) = 4 + 16 = 20.
The Square Root Property
The square root property says that if x2 = a2, then x = ±a.
Example 1: The equation x2 = 9 has the two solutions
x = 3 and x = –3.
Important note: Using the square root property is different from taking a square root. We apply the square root property to an equation of the form x2 = a2 to get two solutions, whereas when we take the positive square root of a number we get just one answer.
For example when we take the positive square root of 9 we get 3, but when we apply the square root property to the equation x2 = 9, we have seen that we get the two solutions x = 3 and x = –3.
Example 2:
(x – 3)2 = 2
What is the solution set of the above equation?
(A) {1, 5}
(B) {3 + √2}
(C) {3 – √2, 3 + √2}
(D) The equation has no solutions.
I will provide you with the solution to this problem next week. In the meantime feel free to try this problem yourself and post your own solution in the comments.

Completing the Square

Today I would like to discuss the method of completing the square. This is a technique with many useful applications. In particular, there are several types of problems on the revised SAT where this technique can be used.
We complete the square on an expression of the form
x2 + bx
To complete the square we simply take half of b, and then square the result. In other words we get (b/2)2.
The expression x2 + bx + (b/2)2 is always a perfect square. In fact,
x2 + bx + (b/2)2 = (x + b/2)2
Example 1: Let’s complete the square in the expression x2 + 6x.
Well half of 6 is 3, and when we square 3 we get 9. So the new expression is x2 + 6x + 9 which factors as (x + 3)2.
Important notes: (1) When we complete the square we usually get an expression that is not equal to the original expression. For example,
x2 + 6x ≠ x2 + 6x + 9.
(2) The coefficient of x2 must be 1 before we complete the square. So, for example, we cannot complete the square on the expression
2x2 + 32x.
But we can first factor out the 2 to get 2(x2 + 16x), and then complete the square on the expression x2 + 16x to get
2(x2 + 16x + 64).
Note that we increased the expression by 2 ⋅ 64 = 128 .
Example 2:
If the method of completing the square is used to rewrite the expression above in the form (x – h)2 + k, then what is the value of h – k ?
I will provide you with the solution to this problem next week. In the meantime feel free to try this problem yourself and post your own solution in the comments.

28 New SAT Math Lessons – Advanced Course

Last week I posted a question from my new book 28 New SAT Math Lessons – Advanced Course. Today I will provide a solution to that question. And now here is last week’s question with a solution.
Level 5 Passport to Advanced Math
For a polynomial p(x), the value of p(–3) is 5. Which of the following must be true about p(x) ?
(A) x – 8 is a factor of p(x).
(B) x + 5 is a factor of p(x).
(C) x – 5 is a factor of p(x).
(D) The remainder when p(x) is divided by x + 3 is 5.
This problem can be solved in just a few seconds if you know the remainder theorem. This theorem says that for a polynomial p, p(r) = a if and only if the remainder when p(x) is divided by x – r is a.
To apply the remainder theorem to this questions, since p(–3) = 5, by the remainder theorem , the remainder when p(x) is divided by x + 3 is 5, choice (D).

I am pleased to announce that I will be releasing the new edition of my best selling SAT math book, the Advanced Course from my 28 SAT Math Lessons series in just a few short weeks.
Get on the Notification List
If you are interested in this book, then I strongly suggest you get on my notification list as I will be releasing the book at a very low promotional price for the first few hours of its release. To get on the list simply send an email to
with the words “Notify Me” in the subject line.
Get a FREE Sample
If you would like to also get an idea of what the new book will look like, then I am happy to provide you with a free sample consisting of 2 full lessons from the book. To get the free sample simply include the words “Free Sample” in the main body of the email. Please be patient as it may take up to 24 hours to get the sample to you. I anticipate that I will be fulfilling a lot of these requests.
It would be great if you could also provide some information about yourself in the email. For example, are you a student, a parent, a teacher, a tutor, or just someone that enjoys mathematics. What do you do for a living? What are your hobbies? And anything else you would like to share. I would genuinely like to learn about the people that are interested in my materials. This is of course optional however.
I’d like to finish this post with an additional problem right from the book (this one is not included in the free sample). Feel free to post your attempted solutions in the comments. I will provide my own solutions next week.
